Médecin célèbre Friedrich Trendelenburg

Friedrich Trendelenburg was born in May 24th, 1844 in Berlin. He studied medicine at the University of Glasgow and then of Edinburgh. He received his doctorate in 1866, at the age of 22. He practiced medicine in various german towns and became surgeon-in-chief in Leipzig in 1895 at the age of 51. Friedrich Trendelenburg is perhaps most remembered for the Trendelenburg position in which the patient is placed on a bed which is put into decline such that the patient’s head is lower than his feet. Trendelenburg first used this technique in 1881 for an abdominal surgery. Other innovations : Trendelenburg is also know for inventing Trendelenburg’s cannula, a cannula used during surgery of the larynx to prevent the patient from swallowing blood during the operation. He also invented a treatment of varicose whichinvolves ligation of the saphenous vein. He died in 1924 of cancer of the mandible, aged 80.
